Extra care should be taken in matters of washing hands. It is important to keep the hands clean and sanitized; however washing the hands too much may cause the condition to become more severe. In the kitchen, after working in water, hands must be dried with a hand towel every time. It is better to use lukewarm water and good quality substitutes of soap while washing the dishes. Always remember to dilute the detergents in water before coming in contact with them. Detergents have irritants that may aggravate the condition. Avoid harsh soaps while bathing. Instead you can use soap free body washes or mild soaps. Soaps that have strong fragrances are the ones that contain harsh substances.
Industrial oils or chemicals or nay detergents must be avoided completely. If it is not possible then you can wear gloves to protect your hands. Rubber gloves may irritate the hands, it is beneficial to wear plastic gloves that has an inner cotton lining. Be careful of irritants like garlic and onions while chopping them. If they irritate the hands first wash hands with running water and then smear oil on the area. Avoid peeling citrus fruits without gloves. Use a good sun block with SPF up to 100 at the back of hands while driving to avoid rashes from sun rays. Gloves must be used while applying hair products. Any kind of polish- for window, car or furniture must be avoided to come in contact on bare hands. Same should be done with petrol, acetone, xylene or other solvents. Eczema on hands is at a higher risk of contracting secondary infections. Thus, special precautions must be taken while cleaning toilet, dirty clothes or touching places where germs may thrive.
Eczema on hands can be treated quickly if special care and precautions are taken at home. However it is important to consult a doctor as the condition persists and becomes severe. One needs to be patient as hand eczema may take a little longer to heal on its own.
